Pediatric Psychologist

Akron Children's Hospital is dedicated to building a diverse workforce that reflects our patient population and communities we serve. The Division of Pediatric Psychology at Akron Children's Hospital (ACH) is seeking to grow our team with several pediatric psychologist positions. Opportunities to specialize in one or more areas of pediatric subspecialty medicine exist based on candidates' interest and expertise.

• Behavioral Sleep Medicine. This role joins an established and growing multidisciplinary team in the sleep center. The psychologist will evaluate and treat behavioral sleep concerns including insomnia, nightmare disorders, nighttime fears, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias, and concerns with sleep quality. Embedded within the outpatient Sleep Center, close collaboration with medical and behavioral health team members is encouraged.
• Consultation / Liaison. The inpatient C/L service provides psychological consults and brief intervention for youth admitted to medical floors. The psychologist will join the established inpatient C/L team to expand quality services for concerns such as pain management, medical trauma, adjustment to serious illness or injury, and adherence to medical recommendations. Curbside teaching of medical residents and support for medical and nursing staff, along with expanding trauma-informed care, are integral parts of this role.
• Cardiology. This role provides an opportunity to expand and build an integrated service within the Cardiology Division. The psychologist will provide collaborative care for youth and adults (if interested) with cardiac conditions, across inpatient, outpatient, and multidisciplinary clinic settings, with close collaboration to medical providers, nurses, educators, social work, nutrition, and palliative care.
• Oncology. Embedded within the oncology division, this role offers the opportunity to join a pediatric oncology service with close collaboration across medical providers, nurses, therapists, social work, child life, chaplaincy, palliative care, expressive therapies, and school liaison/teachers. The psychologist will evaluate and treat patients with cancer or bone marrow transplant across inpatient, outpatient, and multidisciplinary clinics.
• Nephrology. This role supports an integrated service within Nephrology. The psychologist will provide collaborative care for youth with kidney-related conditions, including end-stage renal disease, dialysis, and post-transplant care. Common concerns include medical adherence, adjustment to the medical course, pre-transplant evaluations, and quality of life improvements.
• Feeding Disorders Program. The psychologist will join an interdisciplinary Feeding Team, conducting individual and team evaluations and providing treatment for feeding difficulties, including ARFID and Pediatric Feeding Disorder. Opportunities for program development and clinical research are encouraged, with access to a robust research database.

Opportunities for engagement in program development, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical research are robust, with research support available through protected time and collaboration with the Research Institute for research coordination and statistical support. There are opportunities for mentorship and collaboration with local universities for clinical research and student support.

Training and supervision opportunities are available, including externships with area universities, a Pediatric Psychology Internship Program, and a Pediatric Psychology Fellowship Program. Psychologists work with pediatric residents and fellows in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Child Psychiatry, and medical subspecialties to provide interprofessional education. Opportunities to teach medical students via collaboration with the region’s medical university are available. Educational and mentorship support is provided for new supervisors and those seeking to enhance educator skills.
