OPTOMETRIST
SUMMARY: Ensure excellence in patient care by conducting eye exams, addressing issues of disease and/or injury, and educating patients regarding the eye care options. Treat patients with compassion and work collaboratively with the rest of staff to meet all patient needs.SUPERVISOR: Medical Director DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides outpatient care for patients with eye related disorders and conditions for pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations
- Provides complete documentation of patient encounter in EHR including detailed medical histories, current medication, social history, family history, anterior and posterior evaluations of the eyes, dilates eyes when appropriate, orders and completes additional office procedures when appropriate, prescribes medication/glasses/contact lenses/vision aids/therapy, completes assessment and plan patient education.
- Practices optometry to the full scope of licensure
- Consults with other health care practitioners for co-management of eye diseases and systemic conditions
- Abides by policies set in the department and API as a whole
- Complies with audit measures, meaningful use criterion, e‑prescribing, etc.
- Educates patients on proper eye care including eye hygiene and safety factors
- Participate in staff development and training
- Refers patients to trusted specialist as needed. Follows‑up on results of reports from specialists and documents interpretations in EHR
- Maintains a positive attitude and team‑oriented approach to patient care
- Compassionate patient care, practices cultural sensitivity, and has professional chair side manner
- Possesses solid knowledge of both science and art of optometry. Continuous commitment to remaining up to date on the latest research and techniques
- Maintains licenses/certifications up to date including but not limited to OH license of optometry, DEA license, BLS, etc.
- Works with quality team and health center administrator to ensure QI measures such as cycle time, missed opportunities, no show rate, third next available, etc. is reached daily
- Provides telephone consultation to patients when needed and documents phone conversations in EHR
- Ensures efficient flow of patients in and out of the health centers
- Performs functions, duties, and services in compliance with regulatory agencies, HRSA, API Board of Directors.
- Monitors strict adherence to:
Universal infection precautions established by the CDC and OSHA - Communicates effectively with all levels of staff throughout the department and health centers
- Trouble shoots difficult problems and takes independent actions to solve them
- Through teamwork and accountability, exhibits behaviors and attitudes of courtesy and respect for all staff at the health center in accordance with its mission and values
- Establishes and maintains effective and positive working relationships with representatives of outside agencies, government entities, vendors, as well as other staff and volunteers. Represents API when appropriate
- Ensures patient confidentiality and demonstrates complete discretion when discussing patient information.
- Practices cost‑effective medicine by implementing appropriate prescription in line with all drug formularies.
- Completes documentation of charts in a timely manner, ensuring accuracy and completeness, so that the health centers can collect funds for services.
- Available to work some evenings/Saturdays
- Available to work at multiple health centers
Applicants must be graduates of an accredited college of optometry and must pass Parts I, II, and III of the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) exams and obtain a license to practice in the state of Ohio. Current Ohio driver’s license is also required.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED:
- Licensed to practice optometry in the State of Ohio
- NBEO Certified (Parts I, II, & III)
- Valid unrestricted Ohio driver’s license
- Current DEA Registration
This position requires compliance with API's written standards, including its Compliance Program and Standards of Conduct and policies and procedures. Such compliance will be an element considered as part of the regular performance evaluation.
