Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to Manager of Mental Health Day Treatment, the successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementation and evaluating nursing care and practice activities in a multidisciplinary environment. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the Registered Nurse primarily provides intake, assessment, health teaching and group therapy to adults aged 18 and over in a day treatment setting.

The focus of the program is primarily to assist the client in developing or enhancing coping skills related to the social, emotional, and psychological difficulties he/she presents with and to link the patient to appropriate community services upon discharge for continuity of care. The RN may also provide psycho-education and health teaching to family members of clients who are in the program as required.

Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (in good standing);
  • A current B.C.L.S. certificate is required
  • BScN is an asset
  • Minimum 5 year Mental Health/psychiatric experience with individuals with mental illness and/or addictions
  • CNA certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining Reflective Practice Standards as outlined by the CNO;
  • Demonstrated excellent knowledge of, and experience in group theories and dynamics;
  • Demonstrated experience in providing individual and group therapy
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Community Mental Health Resources;
  • Demonstrated understanding of medications used to manage Mental Health concerns
  • Completion of a Non-Violent Crisis Prevention or equivalent course, or within 1 month of hire.
  • Completion of a Mental Health Certificate Program preferred with expected completion within 3 years of hire.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of Trauma-informed care
  • Demonstrated understanding of approaches to assessing and management of suicide risk
  • Demonstrated ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring crisis intervention
  • Ability to conduct Mental Health Assessment with excellent interviewing and communication skills;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to develop a therapeutic Nurse-Client relationship and work within a collaborative and diverse interprofessional team;
  • Effective leadership, decision-making, organizational and problem solving skills are required as demonstrated by previous experience in a charge/team lead role.
  • Ability to work with clients of diverse cultural and social backgrounds is necessary
  • Bilingualism or proficiency in a second language would be an asset;
  • Must have satisfactory performance record;

The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and the Ontario Nurses Association (RN Bargaining Unit Local 051).
