Job Description Position Overview
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for custom steel fabrication and manufacturing projects. This role involves reviewing technical drawings and specifications, analyzing material and labour requirements, and working closely with engineering, production, and sales teams to develop profitable and well‑structured proposals.
Key Responsibilities Estimating & Cost Analysis- Review project drawings, specifications, and client requirements to define scope of work.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates covering materials, labour, equipment, subcontracting, and overhead.
- Develop pricing strategies that balance competitiveness and profitability.
- Maintain accurate records of estimates, assumptions, and historical cost data.
- Interpret structural, mechanical, and fabrication drawings.
- Assess fabrication complexity including cutting, forming, welding, machining, and finishing processes.
- Ensure estimates align with applicable industry codes and standards (e.g., CWB, ASME where applicable).
- Request and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Coordinate with purchasing to confirm material availability, pricing, and lead times.
- Monitor steel pricing trends and market conditions impacting cost.
- Work closely with engineering, production, and sales teams to refine scopes and resolve technical questions.
- Participate in pre‑bid meetings and provide clarifications during the proposal stage.
- Support project handover from estimating to production teams.
- Identify potential project risks related to cost, schedule, and fabrication constraints.
- Apply appropriate contingencies and document assumptions clearly.
- Continuously improve estimating accuracy through post‑job cost reviews.
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Minimum 3–5 years of estimating experience in steel fabrication, structural steel, or heavy manufacturing environments.
- Strong knowledge of steel fabrication processes and manufacturing workflows.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications.
- Experience with estimating software and strong proficiency in MS Excel and MS Office.
- Familiarity with fabrication codes and standards such as CWB and ASME is an asset.
- Understanding of shop production processes, labour costing, and material utilization.
- Excellent analytical and numerical skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organisational abilities.
- Effective communication skills with internal teams and external clients.
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.
