Kitchen Assistant

A successful kitchen assistant is essential to the smooth operation of the Village Café. This role supports the kitchen team by ensuring a clean and organized kitchen environment, as well as assisting with food preparation and kitchen duties. The kitchen assistant must maintain high standards of cleanliness, organization, and teamwork to contribute to the overall dining experience. This position will report to the Kitchen Supervisor(s) and ultimately to the Village Café General Manager.

Responsibilities

Kitchen Operations and Maintenance:
  • Wash, dry, and store dishes, kitchen equipment, and other items promptly and accurately.
  • Pick up dishes, ensuring that all areas are clean and tidy.
  • Organize and restock kitchen equipment, ingredients, and supplies, making sure they are easily accessible.
  • Maintain a clean and organized dish pit, scrubbing floors and walls regularly.
  • Collect and dispose of trash from kitchen areas, break down boxes, and dispose of them properly.
  • Assist with general kitchen cleaning, including sweeping, scrubbing, and mopping communal areas and restocking cleaning supplies and towels.
Food Preparation And Cooking Support
  • Assist with stocking and setting up kitchen stations before and during service.
  • Prepare food, including cleaning and cutting ingredients, following the guidance of the Kitchen Supervisor(s).
  • Operate large kitchen equipment, such as mixers, slicers, ovens, grills, and griddles.
  • Plate and prepare food according to quality standards and customer specifications, ensuring timely and accurate service.
  • Assist with organizing and cleaning walk-in coolers, freezers, and storage areas.
Quality And Safety Compliance
  • Ensure all food preparation areas comply with health and safety regulations.
  • Verify that all prepared food meets presentation and quality standards before serving.
  • Follow proper food safety, sanitation, and hygiene procedures at all times.
Inventory And Equipment Management
  • Label and stock all ingredients on shelves, ensuring they are organized and easily accessible for staff.
  • Ensure that kitchen equipment is maintained properly and coordinate with vendors for repairs or servicing when needed.
Position Requirements
  • Must have at least 1 year of dishwashing experience.
  • At least 2 years of prep or line cook experience is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of professional cooking and knife handling skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on your feet for 8‑10 hours.
  • Familiarity with safety, sanitation, and food handling procedures;
    Serv Safe certification is a plus.
  • Flexibility to work shifts, weekends, nights, and holidays as needed.
  • Must maintain a hygienic appearance and wear non‑slip work shoes.

Kitchen Supervisor(s) and ultimately the General Manager.
