Fire Protection Design Engineer – Alarm & Detection Systems
Number of Positions: 2
Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (active DOE L/Q preferred)
Work Schedule: Up to a 40-hour work week (5/8s, 4/10s, or 9/80 schedule depending on project needs)
Pay Rate: $79–$85/hr
ImpactAs a Fire Protection Design Engineer
, you will support critical national security and nuclear facility operations at the Savannah River Site
. In this role, you will design and implement fire detection and alarm systems that protect personnel, facilities, and mission‑critical infrastructure. Your engineering expertise will help ensure compliance with national safety standards while enabling safe and reliable operation of complex DOE facilities.
- Provide design engineering support for fire protection systems including fire alarm, detection, and signaling systems.
- Perform engineering task analysis, field walkdowns, and design development for facility fire protection systems.
- Location plans
- Conduit/block diagrams
- Logic diagrams
- Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
- Battery loading calculations
- Ensure system designs comply with national consensus codes and standards
. - Provide technical support to construction teams, startup/testing groups, suppliers, and subcontractors
. - Prepare technical data sheets, procurement specifications, statements of work, design‑build specifications, and purchase requisitions
. - Support construction execution through technical reviews, troubleshooting, and field coordination
. - Deliver engineering services in alignment with Savannah River Site engineering processes and procedures

Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering plus one of the following
: - Registered Professional Engineer (PE) – Fire Protection
- NICET Level III or IV in Fire Alarm / Detection / Signaling
- Professional or Fellow Member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE)
Experience
- 10+ years of recent engineering design experience
- At least 4 years focused on Fire Alarm, Detection, and Signaling system design
- Detection and signaling systems
- Electrical/control system interfaces
- Logic diagrams, connection diagrams, and panel layouts
- P& and battery load calculations
Candidates should demonstrate expertise in:
- NFPA Codes & Standards (NFPA 13, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, NFPA 90A, NFPA 101)
- International Building Code (IBC)
- ISA / IEEE standards related to fire detection systems
- Fire alarm and detection system design
- Electrical and control system integration
- Engineering documentation and technical specifications
- Microsoft Office for engineering documentation and reporting
- Previous Savannah River Site (SRS) or DOE facility engineering experience
- Experience supporting nuclear, chemical process, or highly regulated facilities
- Familiarity with SRS engineering design processes and procedures
- Active or recent DOE L or Q clearance
- Frequent field walkdowns of active construction or operating facilities.
- Work may involve:
- Walking long distances on uneven terrain
- Climbing ladders or accessing elevated areas
- Working in industrial environments with required protective equipment
