The Safety Officer is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment at the wastewater treatment facility. This role ensures compliance with federal, state and local safety regulations, conducts regular inspections and promotes a culture of safety among all staff.
Responsibilities- Conduct safety audits and inspections of the facility, equipment and operations to identify hazards and ensure compliance.
- Works with department heads to establish and oversee all required training for new and current employees, creates and maintains a safety training matrix for all employees.
- Develop and enforce safety policies, procedures and training programs tailored to wastewater operations.
- Investigate incidents and near-misses, prepare reports and recommend corrective actions.
- Represent the Plant at all Safety Committee Meetings for the County.
- Coordinate emergency response plans including spill containment, fire safety and evacuation procedures.
- Monitor use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure proper maintenance and availability.
- Conduct safety training for new hires and ongoing refresher courses for all staff.
- Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to integrate safety into daily workflows.
- Stay updated on environmental and safety regulations relevant to wastewater treatment.
- Maintain safety documentation including OSHA logs, inspection records and training certifications.
- Submit data to the County Risk Manager for record retention and external reporting.
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science or related field (preferred).
- Minimum 3 years of experience in industrial safety, preferably in wastewater or utilities.
- Certification in OSHA, NEBOSH or equivalent safety programs.
- Strong knowledge of hazardous materials handling, confined space entry and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Pursuing Level A Wastewater Operator Certificate, Level C within first year of role, Level A Year 3.
- Excellent communication and training skills.
- Proficiency in safety management software and reporting tools.
