Engineering roles perform engineering work in operations, production, construction, or maintenance environments. They may design and scale up manufacturing processes, instruments and equipment and tests manufactured products to maintain quality. They may plan, design, and estimate time and cost and oversees construction and maintenance of structures, facilities, systems, and components. They analyze and develop solutions to engineering problems related to manufacturing equipment and systems or the causes of component failures.
They develop and apply engineering standards and procedures and provide advice on issues within the engineering field.
Environmental remediation personnel conduct engineering studies related to the evaluation of contaminated sites to determine the scope, constituent content, and physical parameters of the pollutants. The studies focus on the most feasible, cost effective and timely methodology available for remedial action in keeping with environmental and regulatory requirements, and with responsible community action. They conduct extensive investigation of the site to determine the extent of contamination, defining the alternatives that can be employed to complete the clean-up and ensuring the work will be in accordance with all federal and state regulatory requirements and within the company s environmental policies.
They develop plans and specifications for remedial and removal actions in response to identifying environmental media contaminated with hazardous substances. They respond to requests from operating units on geo-environmental engineering problems and facility decontamination issues, and maintain a strong working knowledge on the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and how they impact each clean-up operation.
Duties & Responsibilities Include
- Provide technical direction for groundwater remediation projects with emphasis on geological, geochemical, and hydrological aspects of environmental characterization and remediation of hazardous/radiological waste disposal sites as required under SRS RCRA Permits and the SRS Federal Facilities Agreement.
- Provide direction for and review of work plans/sampling plans/RI/BRA/FS reports related to investigation and remediation activities and remediation of hazardous/radiological waste sites.
- Research/promote the development and application of new and innovative investigative and remediation techniques.
- Interpret and integrate hydrogeologic and geochemical data to develop conceptual models of complex hydrogeologic systems, and assess their impact on the fate and transport of contaminants.
- Function as the primary technical interface with the SME for groundwater flow and fate and transport modeling in the EC&ACP Engineering group, including review of model results.
- Interface with data management and design authority engineering, EC&ACP program and project management, and other SRS support organizations in project planning and execution.
- Compile and evaluate site investigation and remedial system monitoring data using the CEDMS database.

- Prepare and/or review data tables, potentiometric contour maps, isoconcentration contour maps, hydro graphs, and cross-sections.
- Develop understanding of SRS hydrogeologic units of interest (Upper Three Runs, Gordon and Crouch Branch aquifers) and fate/transport properties of contaminants (chlorinated solvents, metals, PCBs, radionuclides, PFAS).
- Work within safety, quality, budget, and schedule expectations and support 5-year cost and schedule planning for RCRA and FFA driven scope.
- Demonstrate safety-oriented behavior and commitment to safe work practices.
