The Botanical Biologist/Horticultural Technician will provide technical assistance to the Army Natural Resources Program at the Pohakuloa Training Area, Hawaii, by supporting the genetic conservation and out planting program (~50% time) and other plant monitoring and management activities (~50% time). Responsibilities include greenhouse operations, seed inventory, site preparation and maintenance, and managing rare plant populations.

The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest science to promote sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DOD) and other public lands, providing technical support, applied research, and career development.
EssentialJob Duties
- Maintain greenhouse operations: plant care, integrated pest control, irrigation systems, automated operational systems, seed inventory, and phyto-sanitation.
- Inventory and survey rare plant populations, focusing on threatened and endangered species.
- Control invasive plants near endangered species and prepare out planting sites.
- Use GPS mobile data devices for site navigation, data collection, and transect management.
- Maintain and troubleshoot field gear, equipment, vehicles, work spaces, and the base yard.
- Pre‑employment criminal background check required.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain a Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC), public trust clearance, NACI/SF85, and federal background check.
- No supervisory responsibilities.
- BS/BA in botany, horticulture, natural resource management, environmental science, or closely related field, or four years of equivalent work experience.
- Experience monitoring rare plants and vegetation.
- Experience working with rare, threatened, and endangered plants in Hawaii.
- Experience propagating and caring for plants in a greenhouse setting.
- Proficiency in field navigation with maps and GPS.
- Ability to perform strenuous field work on rugged terrain.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid U.S. State driver’s license (or ability to obtain).
- Experience with native plant restoration: seed collection, propagation, site preparation, out planting, and maintenance.
- Teamwork skills.
- GIS experience.
- Experience with chemical and mechanical control of invasive species.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Database record-keeping experience.
- Experience on a military installation or prior military service.
- 4-wheel drive vehicle operation experience.
$25 per hour
