A good athlete irrespective of the sport he / she plays exhibits certain qualities which are common across all sports persons. Listed below are some qualities that are necessary to become a good player of any sport.

You must be willing to learn and open to learning. First learn to unlearn. Go with an open mind and a clean slate and begin from the basics. Take criticism in your stride and receive praise with humility.
Be passionate about your game. Winning should be a burning desire. Go all out and prepare for the game and give it your best. Don't be disheartened if the outcome is not what you expected. Get up and begin all over again.
Practice, the key word to succeed in any sport. Speed, skill, and techniques all develop only with consistent practice. The effort you put into improving a game and the number of hours you practise getting it right will give you the winning edge over others.
Be prepared to make sacrifices. You must be willing to give up short term pleasures for long term benefits. The thrill of scoring a winning hit for your home team erases all the difficulties you may have undergone.
You must eat, sleep and dream about the game. Determination and discipline are the key traits of an excellent sportsperson. Aim for perfection always.
You must be able to play under duress and give the game your full attention. You must be prepared to carry the responsibility of the outcome of the game on your shoulders. Carry your team with you and guide them to bring out the best in all of them.

Listen to your coach and trainers. They have been in the game longer than you have. Experience is the best teacher. Learn from their experiences and their mistakes. Be open to changes and not rigid in your thinking in the ways a game should be played.
