Network Engineering Intern

Overview

Networking & Unified Communications Interns assist in the implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the company’s network and unified communications infrastructure. This role provides hands‑on experience supporting enterprise networking, VoIP, messaging, and collaboration platforms while working alongside experienced engineers. Interns gain exposure to modern communication technologies, network operations, and automation tools, offering an excellent opportunity to build foundational skills in IT infrastructure, networking, and unified communications.

• Assist in the configuration, maintenance, and monitoring of networking equipment such as switches, routers, wireless access points, firewalls, and VoIP devices.
• Support troubleshooting activities to resolve network and communication issues, including connectivity problems, call quality issues, dropped calls, messaging failures, and audio/video disruptions.
• Help monitor network performance and unified communications platforms to ensure reliable connectivity and service availability.
• Assist with physical infrastructure tasks such as cabling, installation of networking and telephony hardware, and basic maintenance of power systems (UPS and PDUs).
• Support the configuration and maintenance of on‑premise and/or cloud‑based unified communications systems (UCaaS), including VoIP, desk phones, softphones, messaging, and collaboration tools.
• Assist in managing phone numbers (DID, TFN) and SIP trunking with service providers.
• Document network and unified communications configurations, troubleshooting steps, and project activities for future reference.
• Shadow senior engineers to gain exposure to automation, monitoring tools, and integration of communication systems with third‑party services.
• Participate in networking, unified communications, and call center (CCaaS) initiatives to gain practical, real‑world experience.
• Assist with application development or scripting tasks as needed to enhance and automate existing systems.

• Enrolled in or recently completed a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Basic understanding of networking fundamentals, including the OSI model, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching, and wireless networking.
• Familiarity with or interest in learning VoIP and unified communications protocols and platforms (e.g., SIP, UCaaS, messaging, conferencing tools).
• Eagerness to learn scripting and automation concepts using languages such as Python or Bash.
• Strong problem‑solving skills with a passion for troubleshooting network and communication systems.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

• Entry‑level certifications such as CompTIA Network+, CCNA, JNCIA, or basic VoIP/Unified Communications certifications are a plus but not required.
