The Linux & Unix Systems Engineering Supervisor leads a small team of engineers (Levels I-III) responsible for supporting and modernizing RHEL and Solaris platforms. This player‑coach role balances people leadership with hands‑on engineering to ensure reliability, security, and operational excellence across enterprise systems. The supervisor guides architecture decisions, oversees workload distribution, ensures compliance, and represents the team in cross‑functional forums (CAB/ARB) and strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise 2-4 engineers (Linux/Unix Systems Engineer I-III); conduct regular 1:1s, coaching, and performance feedback.
  • Plan and assign work based on skill level; set team goals, priorities, and deliverable timelines.
  • Lead hiring/onboarding for the team; create individualized development plans (e.g., RHCSA RHCE RHCA).
  • Mentor Engineer I in foundational skills; guide Engineer II in project ownership; review Engineer III designs as technical lead.
  • Own operational KPIs: patch & hardening compliance, SLA adherence, backup verification, configuration drift, and automation coverage.
  • Manage on‑call readiness, rotation, and escalation paths; lead post‑incident RCAs and drive corrective actions.
  • Ensure audit readiness (SOX, HIPAA, PCI) and coordinate evidence with Security/Compliance.
  • Oversee and participate in design and deployment of RHEL and Solaris platforms across physical and virtualized environments (AWS; Azure; VMware; LDOMs/Zones).
  • Support container development and administration (such as Docker, Podman; Kubernetes/Open Shift environments where applicable).
  • Guide HA cluster architectures (e.g., Pacemaker/Corosync) and enterprise storage (LVM, ZFS, Stratis, Ceph Storage, or other enterprise storage technologies).
  • Review and approve Configuration-as-Code (e.g., Ansible) and Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., Terraform) patterns, author critical modules or reference templates when necessary.
  • Oversee standard OS images (Kickstart, cloud‑init) and repository/lifecycle management; ensure consistency across environments.
  • Direct advanced troubleshooting during complex outages; partner with Principal/Staff engineers for architectural escalations.
  • Enforce OS hardening standards (DISA STIG, CIS benchmarks) and vulnerability remediation processes.
  • Maintain platform standards, SOPs, and runbooks; ensure documentation quality and currency.
  • Ensure change control quality and provide approvals for production changes.
  • Validate platform readiness for releases and new deployments.
  • Represent the team in CAB and Architecture Review Board; communicate impacts/risks to stakeholders.
  • Coordinate work with Dev Ops, Security, DBAs, Virtual Infrastructure, Networking, and Application Development teams.
  • Provide input on tooling, licensing, and training budgets relevant to Linux/Unix operations.
