The job of Substitute Teacher is to perform the regular teacher’s class plan while the teacher is absent.

• Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, and students.

• Assumes responsibility for instructing classes when a teacher is absent.

• Completes all other responsibilities of the absent teacher during that time.

• Prepares lesson plans with assistance as directed by an administrator when lesson plans are not available.

• Maintains appropriate records: checks test papers, records grades, tracks student assignments, homework, projects, and performs clerical work to maintain student records.

• Provides assistance to students who need special help on days when no teacher is absent.

• Provides individualized and small group assistance for students as indicated by lesson plans.

Reports To: Department Chair/Assistant Principal

Education: Bachelor’s degree

Licenses: Substitute License or higher

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Operating standard office equipment and pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
• Basic math: calculations using fractions, percentages, ratios.
• Reading manuals, writing documents in prescribed formats, presenting information.
• Understanding complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions.
• Grammatical and punctuation concepts; child development stages and learning styles; age‑appropriate activities.
• Scheduling activities; collating data; using basic job‑related equipment.
• Flexibility in working with others, data, and equipment; problem‑solving and independent interpretation of guidelines.
• Communicating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, setting priorities, working as part of a team, managing interruptions.

Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; fine finger dexterity. The job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking, and 45% standing.
