Compensation: $56,900
Location and CoverageLocation: Tulsa, Oklahoma. The selected applicant will be assigned to and must reside within one of the following counties:
Tulsa, Creek, or Wagoner.
Coverage Area: Tulsa District — assigned to one of the listed counties;
Eastern Office covers 25 counties. If a scene need presents in any of the 77 counties, a response will be coordinated between both offices. Travel outside the normally assigned area may be required to complete scene investigations. After training, duty begins in the assigned district. Equipment provided includes a uniform allowance, cell phone, laptop, hot spot, shared vehicle, camera, etc.,
with usage requirements.
Salary: This position is on a 7-year pay scale, starting at $56,900.00. With positive performance reviews, incremental increases occur until the top of the salary band is reached after 7 years. Salaries are non-negotiable. Additional incentives are available after ABMDI certification benchmarks are met.
Training: The selected applicant will complete in-house medicolegal death investigator training in Tulsa, OK. Length: minimum of 8 weeks, with periods away from family and friends and various work hours. After training, investigator will be assigned to field duty with the ability to operate solo.
Responsibilities- The selected applicant must meet the physical and mental requirements of the job and will be subjected to violent, traumatic, unusual, unnatural, and other types of death investigations.
- Represent the agency visibly and adhere to agency policies and guidelines; act as an ambassador of the agency on and off duty.
- Gather information from diverse groups and individuals: law enforcement, physicians, nurses, lawyers, grieving family members, funeral directors.
- Perform physically demanding tasks: work shifts under all environmental conditions, drive long distances, endure sleep deprivation, lift/move bodies (often >100 lbs), and navigate confined or difficult environments during decedent removals.
- Investigate any death reported to OCME, assume jurisdiction as appropriate, and conduct required scene investigations.
- Maintain strong writing and communication skills; document every death call, regardless of jurisdiction; perform follow-up tasks (notifying providers, gathering medical records, obtaining EMS and law enforcement reports, acquiring labs/items for identification).
- May be required to work in the autopsy lab setting, including data entry, photography, lab specimen collection, fingerprinting, and evidence inventory, as assigned by the Investigations Supervisor.
- Complete in-house training with other investigators in Tulsa; post-training field duty with solo operation capability.
- Must meet the physical and mental stamina requirements; strong writing and communication skills; proficiency in basic computer applications; attention to detail.
- Must be at least 21 years old, possess a valid Oklahoma Driver’s License, and have a social security card or work visa.
- Applicants must pass a rigorous character and background investigation.
- Be willing to relocate to one of the specified counties by the end of training; OCME does not reimburse moving or relocation expenses.
- Education and Experience:
Knowledge of medical technology, experience in EMS or medicolegal investigations; degree in crime scene processing, forensic field, or law enforcement with relevant death investigation experience is preferred. ABMDI certification is preferred or to be obtained within two years of employment. Years of experience may substitute for education as determined by the Chief Medical Examiner.
Special Requirements
- Shifts are subject to change; OCME operates 24/7/365, including weekends and holidays; shifts are assigned by seniority bid.
- Investigators may work nights, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather.
- If ending a shift at a scene investigation, you may be required to complete that investigation and report after off time.
