Elementary school counselors are certified/licensed professionals who design and implement a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes student success. They work collaboratively with students, teachers, parents, and administrators to create a safe and supportive learning environment. Their role is proactive, focusing on prevention and early intervention to address the developmental needs of young children.
Details ofRoles and Responsibilities 1. Academic Support
- Assist students in developing organizational, time management, and study skills.
- Encourage a growth mindset and positive attitudes toward learning.
- Collaborate with teachers to identify and support students with learning challenges.
- Classroom Lessons:
Support educators teaching lessons on topics such as emotional regulation, social skills, or conflict resolution. - Small Group Counseling:
Facilitate groups for students with similar needs (e.g., coping with divorce, managing anxiety, improving friendships). - Individual Counseling:
Provide short-term, solution‑focused counseling for students facing academic, social, or emotional challenges. - Collect and analyze data to assess student needs, monitor progress, and measure outcomes.
- Help students develop self‑awareness, self‑management, and interpersonal skills.
- Address issues such as bullying, peer relationships, and emotional well‑being.
- Provide crisis intervention and support during emergencies or traumatic events.
- Provide immediate support and interventions for students experiencing distress.
- Coordinate with community resources and professionals for long‑term assistance when necessary.
- Partner with teachers, administrators, students, and families to identify lagging skill areas and create individualized plans for student growth.
- Serve as a liaison between the school and external agencies when needed.
- Maintain open communication with families to keep them informed about their child's progress and challenges.
- Use data to identify student needs and develop and implement age‑appropriate counseling plans aligned with school goals.
- Organize workshops and activities that promote mental health awareness and self‑regulation skills.
- Contribute to the creation of a positive school climate through initiatives that foster inclusivity and respect.
- Advocate for equitable access to resources and opportunities for all students.
- Maintain confidential and accurate records of student interactions and interventions.
- Ensure all counseling activities comply with ethical standards and school policies.
Facilitate and manage the school's 504 caseload.
Qualifications Required- Master's degree in School Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
- Valid State School Counselor Certification/License.
- Experience working with elementary‑aged children in an educational or counseling setting.
- Experience with group facilitation and conflict resolution strategies.
- Proficiency in utilizing data‑driven approaches for student success.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time‑management abilities.
- Empathy, patience, and cultural competence.
- Knowledge of child development and age‑appropriate interventions.
Ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion and professionalism.
