The Coordinator of Special Education supervises and coordinates the activities of the faculty and staff assigned to the special education department and is responsible for the implementation of the instructional program at the building and district level in accordance with School Committee policies, State and Federal regulations
Oversee and manage the site-based programming and process for special education.- Facilitate and manage the pre-referral, referral, initial evaluations and placement process for special education students.
- Serve as the TEAM Chair for all initial evaluations, some three-year reevaluation meetings, outside and independent evaluation consideration Team Meetings and other TEAM meetings or those assigned by the Principals and/or Director of Special Education or Assistant Director of Special Education
- Review, edit and sign all special education IEPs and other special education documentation.
- Provide information to faculty and staff regarding changes in regulations, mandates, processes, and procedures to ensure implementation and currency with special education regulations and policies.
- Provide consult to faculty, related service providers and parents/guardians on issues relating to special education
- With direction from the Director of Special Education, review and develop student services programs to meet the needs of students.
- Serve as the identified school's liaison to other agencies serving students with special needs.
- Assist teachers with providing modification of instructional programs and assessments.
- Support the Principals with modifications to and administration of standardized tests for students with special needs, i.e., MCAS.
- Assist TEAMs with placement decisions to ensure access to all programs and curricula for students with special needs.
- Consult with Instructional Support Teams as necessary.
- Demonstrate understanding and collaborate on district-wide special education student needs, staffing, programming development, and budgetary responsibilities
- Collaborate with other coordinators and district-wide special education administrators to review current programming, to support identified and proposed programming and to support equity of services for all students
- Supervise and evaluate special education faculty and support personnel in accordance with evaluation procedures established by the district and as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools
- Work with Principals and the Director of Special Education to recommend candidates for appointment by the Superintendent of Schools.
- Schedule and coordinate regular department meetings for Special Education faculty and staff, develop agenda with input from Principals and the Director of Special Education and Assistant Director of Special Education
- Monitor the school's special education process and ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations, School Committee policies and district procedures.
- Assist the Director of Special Education with the development of required reports regarding special enrollment, staffing, and programming as required.
- Maintain a current list and description of program options available for students with special needs.
- Review and sign IEPs and manage the school's special education programs, including recommended Extended School Year services.
- Monitor scheduling of special education services and special education assistant support staff required to meet the individual needs of students
- In collaboration with the Director of Special Education, develop and manage annual budgets for special education programs at the school and district level.
- Provide input into preparation of the annual budget proposal, in collaboration with the Principals and Director of Special Education, for the operation of special education programs.
- Massachusetts certification as a Special Education Administrator
- Master's Degree. Evidence of study beyond Master's Degree preferred
- Experience as a special educator at the elementary ,middle school, or high school teacher or related service provider and administrator; experience as a team chairperson preferred
- Effective interpersonal and leadership skills; experience facilitating communication between divergent groups and in consensus decision-making
- Demonstrated success in the development, evaluation, and implementation of both elementary and middle school curriculum and instruction
