Overview
The role is responsible to independently or under the supervision of a senior technologist conduct all operations related to Neurodiagnostic output, such as performing the operation, analyzing its output, and providing diagnosis when required to do so.
Responsibilities- Maintenance of necessary inventory of supplies for the assigned room or workstation, rotation of stock in an orderly fashion, and elimination of outdated items.
- Inform supervisor of equipment malfunction and/or need for repair. Document testing procedures.
- Participate in technical conferences and meetings.
- Technical:
Measure and accurately apply electrodes in a timely manner according to the International 10-20 System. Ensure electrode impedance meets laboratory standards. - Perform EEG recording according to the standards of the laboratory (routine, sleep, and bedside).
- Perform long-term video monitoring EEG in epilepsy monitoring unit.
- Perform Evoked Potentials (Visual, Brainstem, and Somatosensory) studies with high-quality results.
- Perform Nerve Conduction Studies in a highly skilled and patient-appropriate manner.
- Explain the test procedure to the patient to obtain cooperation for a complete examination.
- Implement alternative methods or adjust controls to obtain optimal recording.
- Distinguish between normal and abnormal test results, describing all manifestations observed during tests.
- Knowledge of appropriate actions to take during patient emergency situations and ensure patient safety at all times.
- Write a comprehensive patient history gathering appropriate information from all sources.
- Prepare comprehensive technical summaries of EEGs, EMUs, EPs, and NCS studies.
- Know infection control standards relating to patient and equipment.
- Keep equipment clean, in proper working order, troubleshoot problems, and report or repair them promptly.
- Maintain a high level of safety and health regulation compliance and ensure all parties follow procedures.
- Maintain the strictest confidence regarding patient information.
- Deliver and participate in training and education sessions for department staff, doctors, and nurses in safe handling of drugs and equipment, prescribing (where applicable), administration and treatment; including teaching, induction, peer review, case studies, and clinical presentations.
- Participate in department programs/committees, hospital committees, and staff meetings.
- Participate in orientation and training of new employees.
- Ensure appropriate internal and external sharing of information based on governing policies and procedures.
- Maintain professional knowledge by attending lectures, seminars, or online education units.
- Complete and maintain all regulatory requirements including licensure, certification, and other mandatory training within established time frames.
- Ensure all department members receive adequate clinical supervision as required for their professional and technical development.
- Associate degree (minimum 2-year curriculum) in Applied Sciences, Neurophysiology or Biophysics/Physiology or equivalent.
- Current National License.
- Registered with American Board of Registration of Encephalographic Technologists or equivalent.
- American Board or Registration of Evoked Potential Technologists or equivalent.
- American Association of Polysonnographic Technologists or equivalent.
- NLT 2 years of relevant experience in a hospital setting (EEG/EMG, Evoked Potential, Polysomnographic).
Ability to walk moderate distances, sit and stand for prolonged periods. Ability to bear difficult working conditions. Must observe contact precautions and be prepared for overtime and on-call hours as needed by the department.
