Job Description
The Clinical Genetic Counselor provides expert assessment, education, and support to individuals and families regarding genetic conditions. The role involves analyzing medical and family histories, coordinating and interpreting genetic tests, offering patient‑centered counseling, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to guide clinical decision‑making. The counselor also contributes to research, professional education, policy development, and ensures compliance with regulatory and ethical standards while delivering high‑quality, compassionate care.
Responsibilities- Gather and interpret detailed medical, genetic, and psychosocial histories from patients and families.
- Conduct accurate genetic risk assessments and explain available management options.
- Educate patients and families about genetic conditions, diagnostic processes, environmental factors, and clinical implications.
- Request (with a physician, when required), coordinate, and interpret genetic tests and diagnostic studies.
- Integrate test results with clinical history to guide counseling and decision‑making.
- Provide patient‑centered counseling, evaluate responses, and offer anticipatory guidance.
- Coordinate with community and healthcare resources for ongoing support.
- Document interactions, assessments, and plans in the electronic medical record.
- Prepare written reports for families and healthcare providers.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and serve as a genetic resource within the organization.
- Participate in research, policy development, clinical guideline creation, and student/trainee supervision.
- Engage with medical clinics for high‑risk patient management and maintain up‑to‑date knowledge in genomics.
- Required:
- Master of Science in Genetic Counseling (or equivalent)
- Genetic Counseling certification & valid licensure
- Advanced subject‑matter knowledge and strong communication skills
- 2–4 years of progressive experience in a similar role
