01/26/2026Primary Purpose:
The role of a general shop journey is to assist the general shop lead in completing all work assigned to the general shop and to guide and train the apprentice.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalency
- Hold and maintain valid Texas Driver's License and maintain good driving record
- Journey level performance as demonstrated by references and experiences
- 3 - 5 years journey level experience in commercial work
- Must have experience or be willing to work including but not limited to grounds, heavy equipment, concrete, masonry, welding, digging, herbicides and pesticides, irrigation systems, etc.
- Be willing to work with and become knowledgeable in related systems and methods such as but not limited to area drainage, grading, bleacher and goal systems, school related athletic and education equipment and events.
- Be willing to work with computers and other technology items, program and procedures required for Abilene Independent School District (AISD), tasks and needs.
- Must have basic knowledge of, experience with and/or willing to learn
- Repair, build, demolish, replace items, components or physical construction projects. Conforms work to plans, specifications, sketches, or directions in a safe, quality and good workmanship manner. Follow good construction practices
- Be able to detect/repair/replace faulty systems and components including, but not limited to, bleachers, goals, grounds equipment, etc.
- Be able to repair/replace building and site equipment items including, but not limited to, irrigation systems, concrete, structure; such as walks, ramps and steps, fencing systems, etc.
- Be able to understand and conform to regulations related to insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, etc.
- Provide as directed and maintain all playground items and installation in conformance to the latest and most stringent playground safety standards. Maintain documents to indicate roper maintenance and schedule of maintenance. Include dates and personnel performing maintenance.
- Maintain all site related furniture, benches, signage, play slabs, markings, etc.
- Maintain all parking areas, drives, and exterior concrete work
- Be able to cut and prune trees of all heights to remove and control excess, undesired, diseased wood and foliage. Eliminate interference with power and/or communication lines above and below ground. Remove branches and trees to protect nearby buildings and equipment. Cut and remove designated trees and stumps. Recognize and report trees and shrubs having disease or other unhealthy conditions that would create a safety hazard
- Be able to or have experience relating to tractors, backhoe and loaders
- Be able to dig trenches, grade and level, remove trees and shrubs, load and unload trucks, dig post holes and drainage ditches
- Have enough strength and physical dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job

- Provide supervision and training of persons assigned
- Willing to acquire a Non-Commercial Structural Pest Control Board of Texas Certified Applicator and other related license(s) that may be required
- Continue to learn and develop in the field

- Maintain professional work environment through a positive attitude, punctuality, regular attendance, phone etiquette, and personal appearance.
- Repair/replacement of General Shop systems for all AISD facilities
- Conform to industry and shop standards of safety. Maintain a functional awareness of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered by the trade. Promptly report accidents on the job. Prepare and submit accident reports to Supervisor. Responsible for adhering to policies, practices, and procedures on safety and operational instructions. Comply with rules and regulations applicable to building codes.
- Performs work according to codes, manufacturer's specifications, department and trade guidelines and standards
- Reports observed facility discrepancies to supervisor
- Reads and interprets blueprints, specifications, shop drawings, schematic manufacturer's specs, and other reference materials to determine appropriate job requirements and procedures
- May be required to assist with maintaining files
- Prepares and submits paperwork for materials required to complete assigned tasks. Plans work to ensure cost effective use of labor and materials
- Perform assigned staff work including hazardous and other waste management
- Apprentice will be in daily contact with members of the District while following routine work schedules
