GENERAL DESCRIPTION Plant & Equipment Mechanic I

Under immediate supervision this position performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of water treatment plants, raw water intake pump stations, potable water pump stations, elevated and ground storage tanks, lakes, dams, the chlorine dioxide disinfection facility, and a scalping station. Responsibilities include troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment to ensure safe, efficient water production operations.

Plant & Equipment Mechanic II

Responsibilities include troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment to ensure safe, efficient water production operations.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED Plant & Equipment Mechanic I

This position exercises no supervision.

Plant & Equipment Mechanic II/III

This position exercises supervision over lower-level staff and may function as a lead.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical equipment and related components.

Perform general maintenance at water facilities, including carpentry, electrical wiring, plumbing, painting, and related tasks.

Lubricate, change oil, and perform preventive maintenance on motors and equipment.

Operate a city vehicle daily to travel to water treatment plants, pump stations, storage tanks, lakes, and vendors.

Maintain safe and productive work sites at all times.

Perform basic computer operations.

Mow and maintain grounds.

Use hand tools, specialized tools, welding equipment, and electrical test instruments.

Operate a personal or City vehicle.

Plant & Equipment Mechanic II

Maintain clarifiers, chlorinators, chlorine dioxide generators, and related equipment.

Repair, rebuild, or replace pumps, motors, valves, solenoids, and chemical feed systems.

Perform minor electrical troubleshooting and repairs.

Add/remove columns on vertical turbine pumps for optimal water quality.

Plant & Equipment Mechanic III

Maintain Risk Management records for chlorine systems in accordance with TCEQ regulations.

Train, coach, and mentor assigned staff.

Provide advanced troubleshooting.

OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES

Performs other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Plant & Equipment Mechanic I Knowledge of:

Basic electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and hydraulic fundamentals.

General methods of electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and general maintenance repairs.

Standard practices, methods, tools, and materials used in mechanical trades.

Occupational and safety hazards precautions.

Safe driving principles and practices.

Skill to:

Perform maintenance and repair of water treatment equipment and facilities.

Operate a variety of bench and hand tools, machines, and equipment of the mechanical trades.

Safely operate a motor vehicle.

Ability to:

Respond appropriately and use sound judgment under pressure.

Comprehend and execute math formulas to solve basic water equations.

Organize and prioritize work.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.
