GENERAL DESCRIPTIONUnder the administrative direction of the Deputy Fire Chief, the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) is responsible for performing a variety of skilled work in the repair, overhaul, preventive maintenance and operational readiness of public safety equipment and may be assigned to manage the day-to-day operation of the Fire Department maintenance facility.
SUPERVISION EXERCISEDThe Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) I exercises no supervision.
The EVT II may exercise functional supervision over lower level staff.
The EVT III may function as lead worker over other EVT staff, utilizing human resources to accomplish assignments in accordance with safety plans and in an efficient manner.
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIESPlan and schedule Fire Department’s maintenance, both preventive and discretionary; ensure compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and City of Abilene and Fire Department safety policies and regulations in maintenance operations and in determining operational readiness of public safety equipment.
Study problematic equipment and design necessary modifications to correct complications; assist in the development of the Fire Department budget and equipment specifications; make recommendations concerning equipment replacement and purchases and assist in disposal of replaced and used equipment.
Assist in analyzing equipment, material, and supply needs; maintain Fire Department user security for the computerized equipment management information systems (EMIS) and maintain detailed equipment records through the (EMIS).
Stay abreast of new fleet products and research/test them in fleet applications; maintain Tier II hazardous materials reports for the department’s maintenance facility.
Perform routine maintenance and repair of all Fire Department vehicles and equipment including comprehensive fire apparatus repairs, diesel engine repairs, rebuild fire pumps, brake system repairs, electrical system diagnostic and repair, and hydraulic repairs.
Will be subject to call-back assignments when off-duty as assigned by the Division Head; and may serve on various employee committees as required and assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of:- The mechanics and operating principles of both diesel and gas internal combustion engines, pressure pumps, and hydraulics.
- Applicable safety standards for vehicles, equipment, and work areas.
- Safe driving principles and practices.
- Operate a variety of vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to:- Maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies, and procedures.
- Carry out assigned projects to their completion. your own tools.
- Follow verbal and written instructions.
- Obtain the necessary certifications to perform the job.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working the course of work, both internally and externally.

Full range of knowledge to perform a variety of repair, overhaul, preventive maintenance and operational readiness of public safety equipment.
Skill to:- Assess, diagnose, and repair a variety of electrical systems, gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulics, pumps, and any related emergency vehicle systems.
- Perform at journey level in the performance of Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) responsibilities.
