Nurse Tech Job Summary

The Nurse Tech position provides nursing students an opportunity to assist licensed nursing personnel in the implementation of day-to-day patient care as well as the routine operations of the nursing unit which assigned. The Nurse Tech provides care to the patients appropriate to the assigned unit.

The CSS department offers nurse techs the opportunity to gain diverse, hands‑on experience across Telemetry, Med/Tele, and Med/Surg units. Nurse techs will work alongside a seasoned resource nurse, strengthening skills and building confidence while caring for a wide variety of patients. This role allows the nurse tech to practice the skills that they have been checked off on in real‑time, supportive environments.

Centralized Support Nurse Techs may also occasionally have the chance to experience different areas of the hospital (ER, PEDI, M/B, Wound care, NICU, etc.). • Nurse techs for Centralized Support will need to have flexibility and adaptability, as float staff frequently move between Med/Surg, Telemetry, and Med/Tele at both the North and South campus.
• There is not a home unit for this area. All assignments are received the day of your scheduled shift and 1 to 2 hours prior to start of your shift.

• Input data in computer and programs.
• Maintain a professional appearance at all times.
• Ability to handle confidential information.
• The following skills are demonstrated with Centralized Support. The nursing student's level in their nursing program will determine the scope of skills they can perform.
• Start shift by receiving report on assigned patients
• Receive patient assignment from charge nurse or resource nurse, if you are placed with one, and participate in bedside shift report with primary nurse
• Review patient’s charts for orders, medications, results, etc.
• Complete head‑to‑toe assessment on each of your patients including collecting vital signs and document it.
• Discuss any abnormal findings with primary nurse and/or charge nurse
• Document assessments and vital signs in patient’s chart
• Review patient’s plan of care and any needed interventions for the shift
• Most common skills seen include:
  • IV starts and remov
  • Foley catheter insertion, maintenance, and removal
  • NG tubes insertion, maintenance, and removal
  • Administer O2
  • Tube feedings
  • Cough and deep breathing
  • Incentive spirometer use
  • Hot and cold application
  • Surgical drain care
  • Ostomy care
  • Wound care
  • Safety/status checks are to be completed and documented minimum every 2 hours
  • Focused reassessments are to be completed and documented minimum every 4 hours
  • Participate in bedside shift report at shift change with primary nurse
  • Other tasks can include but not limited to:
    • Vital signs
    • Hygiene care
    • Turning and repositioning patients
    • ADLs such as bathing, toileting, ambulation, transferring, etc.
    • Assisting PT/OT as needed
    • Blood glucose checks

• CPR: BLS certification through the AHA

• Must be a nursing student entering 2nd through 4th semester of nursing school

• No previous work experience required
