The Welsh Language Officer (Learner‑Facing Support) plays a vital role in promoting and developing the use of Welsh across the learner experience. Working directly with learners and teaching staff, the postholder will support students to study, complete assessments, and develop confidence through the medium of Welsh or bilingually, ensuring equitable access to high‑quality learning opportunities.

Key Responsibilities Support Learners Directly- Provide in‑class language support for learners completing work in Welsh or bilingually — clarifying tasks, explaining vocabulary, and modelling language use.
- Offer one‑to‑one or small group support sessions to develop learners’ written and spoken Welsh skills.
- Encourage, guide and support learners to attempt assessments through the medium of Welsh where appropriate.
- Help learners to understand assignment brief tasks and translate necessary content when using an English only resource, texts or websites.
- Adapt their learning materials or assessment responses confidently into Welsh.
- Monitor learner progress in using Welsh across tasks and share updates with relevant teaching staff using the mapped Welsh assessment matrix and monitoring & tracking.
- Deliver short Welsh language confidence‑building activities (e.g., quick speaking or writing challenges) and in sessions where there are larger numbers of Welsh speaking learners and an English only lecturer, support and facilitate the Welsh group working elements of the session.
- Track and monitor Welsh assessments undertaken by learners.
- Collaborate with teachers to plan and integrate Welsh language elements naturally into lessons for those learners you are working with/supporting.
- Co‑develop bilingual learning materials and adapt existing resources such as those from Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol for Welsh‑medium use for those learners you are working with/supporting
- Offer translation or proofing support for lesson handouts, assessment briefs for the teachers of those learners you are working with/supporting.
- Support staff in identifying opportunities for learners to showcase Welsh in projects or presentations for those learners you are working with/supporting.
- Help learners understand assessment criteria in Welsh and prepare for bilingual assessments.
- Assist in conducting language skill diagnostics to identify learners’ starting points and set assessment goals for those learners you are working with/supporting.
- Record learner participation and progress in Welsh‑medium work for monitoring and reporting purposes for those learners you are working with/supporting. This will be captured on the relevant course master tracking and monitoring sheet.
- To develop the Welsh language skills of all learners.
- Work with staff to ensure students have the opportunity to study and complete work through the medium of Welsh or bilingually.
- Support students studying through the medium of Welsh or bilingually and to note concern with their progress on EBS and with the tutor.
- Work with teaching staff to assist students studying through the medium of Welsh or bilingually including one‑to‑one and in‑class support.
- Assist undertaking initial assessments and diagnostic tests to assess the Welsh language skills of learners.
- Implement agreed measures to monitor and improve the quality of experience for students.
Essential Criteria Qualifications
- Relevant degree or Teaching Qualifications
- GCSEs Grades A*–C in Mathematics and English or equivalent
- Competence in the use of a wide range of digital systems
- Analysing and reporting digital marketing, recruitment and campaign data
