The Role

As a Town Team Operative, you will support the delivery of grounds maintenance, cleansing and environmental improvement activities across Abergavenny. Working as part of a three‑person team based at Llanfoist Depot, you will help maintain streets, green spaces and public areas to a high standard. Some lone working will be required, particularly when operating a town‑centre cleaning cart for litter picking, sweeping, weeding and bin emptying.

This role provides essential cover during a period of long‑term sickness and requires someone reliable, proactive and committed to maintaining a clean and safe environment for the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out grass cutting and general grounds maintenance.
  • Maintain horticultural features including shrub beds, annual bedding areas and hedges.
  • Undertake landscaping of open spaces and arboriculture tasks.
  • Empty litter bins and complete litter picking across open spaces, verges and hard surfaces.
  • Sweep hard surfaces using both manual and mechanical methods.
  • Remove graffiti as required.
  • Clean, repair and paint street furniture.
  • Apply herbicides (with appropriate training) and remove weeds manually.
  • Power wash hard surfaces and monuments.
  • Conduct daily vehicle safety checks and maintain vehicle cleanliness.
  • Operate plant and machinery in line with manufacturer guidance.
  • Follow all Health & Safety legislation, safe working practices and council policies.
  • Support emergency responses when required (e.g., flooding, snow clearance, storm damage).
  • Uphold the council’s Equal Opportunities Policy and organisational values.

  • Full, clean driving licence.
  • Experience in grounds maintenance, cleansing or similar outdoor operational work.
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently when required.
