Overview

The North of Scotland Clinical Genetics Team seeks a new Consultant (1.0 WTE) following the retirement of a long-serving colleague. The post holder will work with the existing Clinical Genetics Multidisciplinary Team to provide high quality genetic care to patients and families with inherited disorders across the North of Scotland.
The service covers five Health Board Regions - Grampian, Highland, Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles, including two cities and a large geographic area with a total population of around 906,000. The Clinical Genetics Department comprises a Clinical Team and the Genomics Laboratory, based at the Foresterhill Campus in Aberdeen. The Laboratory is run as part of the NHS Scotland Strategic Network for Genomic Medicine.
The Department has links with Children’s Services in Aberdeen and Inverness, including Community Child Health and Learning Disability Services, with Maternity Services in Aberdeen and Inverness and Medical and Surgical Services for Adults and Children. Grampian Secondary and Tertiary Services are based on the Foresterhill Campus, allowing easy access to the Genetic Clinic, Laboratory, Adult, Children’s and Maternity Hospitals, the University of Aberdeen Institutes of Medical Sciences and Applied Health Sciences, and the Suttie Centre.
The department also has a Genetic Counsellor led Hub in Inverness with monthly clinics delivered by the team.
- Provide professionally driven, high quality genetic care to patients and families with inherited disorders across the North of Scotland, working with the Clinical Genetics Multidisciplinary Team.
- Contribute to service improvement, audit, teaching, training, CPD and support ongoing department research.
- Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC (licence to practise must be in place prior to starting in post).
- Trained in the UK with evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from the date of interview.
- CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) or Portfolio Pathway route doctors are eligible to apply for a substantive Consultant post only after CESR or Portfolio Pathway specialist registration is awarded. International Recognised Specialist Qualification approved by GMC should have a confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register.
- Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience not on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive appointment is made; during locum employment, an application to obtain CESR or Portfolio Pathway Specialist Registration can be made to the GMC.
