Substitute Residential Services Professional

This part‑time position is available at The South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Aberdeen. It includes weeknight shifts (Mon‑Fri 3:00 PM‑midnight), weekend and occasional overnight hours, with preference for RN or LPN credentials. Pay is $18.04 / hr plus shift differential.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Supervise students who are blind/visually impaired and those with multiple disabilities in a residential setting during off‑school hours, meals, and weekends.
  • Assist students with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as hygiene, organization, and personal care.
  • Promote a safe, structured, and supportive living environment.
  • Supervise and transport students to after‑school and weekend activities, as needed.
  • Prepare and/or assist with the preparation of meals.
  • Support and manage student behavior using positive, consistent strategies.
  • Maintain accurate residential documentation and daily logs.
  • Communicate effectively with residential, educational, and administrative staff.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students.
  • Maintain appropriate structure, boundaries, and discipline in accordance with school policies.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, initiative, professionalism, and enthusiasm in all aspects of the role.
  • Support students in developing independence and social skills.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including emergency and health protocols.
  • Participate in required training (CPI, medications, etc.).

Skills and Qualifications
  • Good oral and written communication; maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to safely assist with lifting and/or transporting students with physical needs.
  • Maintain a clean and organized working environment.
  • Work collaboratively with co‑workers and students.
  • Follow written and verbal directions accurately.
  • Adapt to changing schedules and student needs.
Other Requirements
  • Background investigation required before employment.
  • Documentation of MMR vaccination required.
Employment Details
  • Hours vary:
    Monday‑Friday 2:30 PM‑10:30 PM or 4:00 PM‑12:00 AM; rotating weekend hours including some overnights.
  • Appointment type: temporary; duration as needed.
  • Position requires overnight stays.
