About Solstice Midwives
Solstice Midwives is a thriving practice in Abbotsford, BC that is dedicated to supporting sustainable practice of midwifery in BC.
We currently have 5 RMs working at our practice with a combination of team based and solo caseloads. We are hoping to welcome another member to the shared caseload team or as a supported solo midwife.
We operate out of our homey office located in central Abbotsford. Abbotsford is located in the beautiful Fraser Valley which is situated on the traditional, unceded territories of the Stó:lō peoples. It is a great place to enjoy the outdoors with unending hiking, camping, and boating locations nearby. We are about 1 hour from downtown Vancouver, just far enough to be a smaller city with light traffic, but close enough to enjoy concerts, cultural, and sporting events.
CareProvided
We provide care throughout pregnancy, birth, and for 6 weeks postpartum. We offer clients choice of home or hospital birth as well as providing some postpartum‑only care. Our home‑birth percentage ranges from 15‑30% depending on client desire. The demand for midwifery services in Abbotsford and surrounding areas is great, and we often have a large waitlist of clients looking for care.
QualificationsApplicants must be residents of Canada with a permit to work, eligible to register with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, and will need to obtain privileges at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Willingness to certify in Induction of Labour for midwives is preferred, although the certification is not required to apply and can be achieved once practicing.
There are currently several vacancies for privileges at Abbotsford Regional Hospital through Fraser Health with a separate Final date to receive applications of April 25, 2026 for this year. Our practice would support the registrant through the privilege application process. Anticipated start date for active privileges is July 1 2026, however integration into the practice for prenatal/postpartum care could be sooner if desired.
What We OfferHow we support each other:
- Midwives in the team rotate call and clinic coverage. On‑call shifts are typically 24 h at a time with 7‑10 shifts each month for full time. Each midwife has the equivalent of 1‑1.5 days of clinic each week.
- Scheduling can be flexible to provide vacation and adequate time off each month. We support each other to have 4‑7 day periods off in a row each month, as well as longer vacations of 2‑4 weeks throughout the year.
- There is flexibility to join the team part‑time or full‑time.
- The team works together with the supported solo midwives to provide sleep relief, postpartum visit help, home birth support, chart reviews, and vacation coverage.
- We are well supported by our physician and nurse colleagues in the hospital setting. There are additional clinics at Abbotsford Regional Hospital dedicated to Diabetes in pregnancy, NSTs, and Nausea and vomiting.
Midwives in BC are paid through MSP by billing per service each trimester, birth, and postpartum, as well as for consult visits.
A full‑time midwife with a caseload of 3‑4 clients per month can expect to make $10‑14k each month with an additional ‘overhead’ payment of 52% paid out every quarter up to $75k each year. Costs for overhead/clinic fees/expenses are about 15‑20% of our base pay (not including the overhead payment).
Application DetailsExperienced midwives or new graduate midwives are welcome to apply. We have experience supporting graduates from BC, ON, and the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program.
If this sounds like a good fit for you feel free to apply. If this job listing is still up, the position is still available.
Start date flexible, between May‑August 2026
