JOB SUMMARY: Engages in the ministry of nursing care for the elderly and chronically ill residents at Broadway Lodge. Responsibilities focus upon the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care encompassing the resident’s physical, emotional, spiritual, recreational and social needs. Duties include the provision of direct nursing care, maintenance of resident care routines and direction of care aides in nursing care.

Report to the Care Team Lead or designated supervisor.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • According to facility guidelines, assesses residents to identify physical, emotional, spiritual, recreational and social needs. Gathers data for baseline assessment for periodic review of care and according to changes in resident condition. Followed by endorsement of assessments to the charge nurse.
  • In conjunction with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, develops the plan of care, under the supervision of the Charge Nurse, for the resident’s physical, emotional, spiritual, recreational and social needs.
  • Implements the plan of care by providing direct nursing care such as assistance with activities of daily living (A.D.L’s). Also, under the direct supervision of the charge nurse administers medications and prescribed treatments, and work direction for care aides.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care, and then informs the charge nurse, resident’s physician and the Director of Care Services of changes in resident condition on as needed.
  • Accurately documents in the resident’s record the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care. Documents promptly unusual incidents regarding staff and residents.
  • Ensures that the medication administration system functions safely, efficiently and in accordance with facility policy. Participates in medication safety committee meetings.
  • Assists the physician with examinations, procedures and diagnostic tests. Executes dental and medical plan of care in accordance with facility policy.
  • Identifies and reports infectious disease and uses medical aseptic techniques as required to protect residents and prevent the spread of disease. Participates in infection control committee meetings.
  • Maintains a safe environment for residents. Identifies and removes malfunctioning equipment, defective supplies and environmental hazards and notifies appropriate departmental personnel, charge nurse, and the Director of Care Services.
  • Teaches and directs care aides to enable them to provide safe, competent resident care.
  • Assists with the admission, transfer and discharge of residents when able. If unsure, always ask the charge nurse for any inquiries.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of facility policies and procedures, particularly those concerning resident care, sanitation, safety, security and emergency procedures.
  • Promotes and maintains effective communication with staff, residents, families, health care personnel and the public.
  • Participates in care plan meetings and team conferences with doctors or community resource personnel. Attends nursing and general staff meetings.
  • Attends in-service education sessions and professional development programs.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the charge nurse.
Education and Experience
  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing.
  • Current practicing registration with the Registered Nurses Association of British Columbia.
  • Knowledge and clinical skills in basic and geriatric nursing.
  • Current Level 1 CPR certification.
  • Optional:
    Previous experience in geriatrics or long term nursing.
Physical

Must be in good health, free from communicable disease and physically fit to perform duties which include standing, bending and lifting heavy residents.

Skills and Abilities
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of facility and health care personnel.
  • Must be able to maintain harmonious relationships with residents and families.
  • Must possess basic leadership skills and a desire for professional development.
  • Must support and facilitate the ministry concept of care at Broadway Lodge.
