Registered Nurse, ICU - Abbotsford Regional Hospital & Cancer Centre

Salary range: CAD $41.42 - $59.52 / hour

Overview

The Critical Care Platform provides care to patients with complex critical care needs. Critical Care is delivered by an interdisciplinary team that provides 24/7 care to patients whose conditions are potentially life threatening and require complex interventions, comprehensive care, and intensive monitoring, including life support and single or multisystem failure. This opportunity is for a regular full-time Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Abbotsford Regional Hospital & Cancer Centre, Abbotsford, BC.

Responsibilities
  • Assess patients and collect information from a variety of sources using observation, communication, data review, and physical assessment. Make nursing diagnoses and determine appropriate nursing interventions. Plan, perform, and evaluate nursing interventions and care.
  • Collaborate with patients and families/caregivers to develop, implement, and modify the care plan. Establish a therapeutic relationship with empathy, trust, and respect, safeguarding privacy and patient autonomy.
  • Participate in admission care planning and discharge planning, updating the care plan and collaborating with the interprofessional care team to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Coordinate nursing care, set priorities, assign and delegate tasks to support staff, and refer to the interprofessional care team according to standards.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional care team (Physicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Patient Care Coordinators, Clinical Nurse Educators, and other professionals) to adjust care plans as needed.
  • Teach patients and families about illness prevention, health restoration, and maintenance; assess learning needs and provide information to support self-care and discharge planning.
  • Discuss and initiate referrals to appropriate health care/community services in collaboration with the care team.
  • Document assessments, nursing diagnoses, interventions, patient/family responses, outcomes, and referrals according to standards and Fraser Health procedures.
  • Participate in nursing committees, care conferences, councils, and quality improvement activities as assigned; pursue ongoing learning to maintain clinical competence.
  • Act as a preceptor or mentor to new nursing staff and students; contribute to orientation and provide feedback on patient care programs and clinical decision tools.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation from an approved School of Nursing with current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Completion of applicable postgraduate coursework or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).

  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessments and provide nursing care with appropriate technical, therapeutic, and safety interventions.
  • Effective communication with patients, families, the public, and the interprofessional care team using verbal, written, and electronic methods.
  • Demonstrates person-centered care with empathy, cultural sensitivity, and patient advocacy.
  • Ability to integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to solve problems.
  • Ability to teach and educate patients and families about health topics.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and collaborate with the care team.
  • Use of relevant evidence-based practice to support nursing decisions.
  • Ability to operate related equipment and computer applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
