The Executive Director serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Upper Island Women of Native Ancestry (UIWONA). The Executive Director provides visionary and strategic leadership, ensures operational excellence, and upholds the organization’s mission, cultural values, and commitment to Indigenous women, children, and families.
Working in partnership with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director advances UIWONA’s strategic priorities, ensures financial sustainability and accountability, and strengthens relationships with K’ómoks First Nation, Indigenous Organizations, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, partners, funders, and stakeholders.
This role requires culturally grounded leadership, strong governance knowledge, and demonstrated experience working within Indigenous community contexts.
Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership and Vision- Collaborate with the Board to develop and execute UIWONA’s strategic plan.
- Identify opportunities for program development and community engagement.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of programs and services.
- Ensure all programs and services reflect Indigenous values, cultural safety, and trauma- informed practices.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Board and staff.
- Provide regular updates on organizational performance and strategic initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with governance policies and facilitate board development activities.
- Oversee daily operations of UIWONA’s early years development programs, adult cultural and support programs to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
- Develop and implement organizational policies and procedures.
- Recruit, supervise and mentor staff.
- Foster a supportive, respectful, inclusive and culturally grounded workplace environment.
- Implement and uphold HR policies aligned with employment standards and Indigenous values.
- Lead performance management, staff development and succession planning.
- Promote staff wellness and culturally safe practices in the workplace.
- Develop and manage the annual budget in collaboration with the finance manager and financial committee.
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities, including grants and donations.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with funders and philanthropic partners.
- Develop long-term funding strategies in alignment with UIWONA’s goals.
- Represent UIWONA in public forums, media engagements, and community events.
- Build and maintain relationships with K’ómoks First Nation, Indigenous organizations, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, partners and stakeholders.
- Advocate for policies and initiatives that support the well-being of Indigenous women, children and families.
- Bachelor’s degree in Non-Profit Management, Indigenous Studies, or a related field; master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of senior leadership experience in a non-profit organization.
- Experience with grant writing, fundraising, and fund development.
- Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, program development, and financial management.
- Strong understanding of K’ómoks First Nation, Indigenous cultures and protocols, histories, and contemporary issues.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
