Detailed Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards and Fraser Health’s mission, the Registered Nurse, Perinatal provides direct patient care to child‑bearing patients and their families during intra‑, postpartum and high‑risk ante‑partum periods, assessing, planning, providing and evaluating nursing care in a perinatal clinical unit.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct a comprehensive nursing assessment of the patient and unborn baby on admission and at regular intervals, allocate patient to appropriate care area, and initiate emergency care as needed.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, physicians, and the inter‑professional team to develop, implement and modify care plans, establishing a therapeutic relationship and advocating for patient rights.
  • Participate in care and discharge planning, ensuring plans are established, implemented and updated effectively in coordination with the inter‑professional team.
  • Coordinate nursing care and make referrals to the inter‑professional team according to established protocols.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to resolve issues, adjust care plans and communicate with the Patient Care Coordinator.
  • Educate patients and families on health promotion, pregnancy, birth, postpartum and newborn care.
  • Plan and discuss referral information with patients and families and initiate referrals to appropriate agencies.
  • Document assessments, diagnoses, interventions and outcomes per practice standards and Fraser Health procedures.
  • Participate in in‑services and educational programs, maintain clinical competence and knowledge.
  • Act as a preceptor or mentor for new staff and students, promoting family‑centered care and providing orientation support.
  • Provide feedback to management on patient care programs, policies, and equipment effectiveness.
  • Engage in quality improvement and risk management activities, reporting safety concerns.
  • Participate in program and professional committees, care conferences and councils as assigned.
  • Participate in research and special projects, collecting or interpreting data as required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduate from an approved School of Nursing, current registered nurse with the BCCNM, one year recent related clinical perinatal experience, completion of postgraduate basic coursework or certification in perinatal nursing, current Basic Rescuer (Level C) and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) certificates.
